About Shihan Barham

Shihan Daniel Barham began training in 1992 at Bradley University, under Dr. June Pilcher (see the Clemson, South Carolina Doshinkan Dojo page.) He was fortunate enough to have trained with the late Hanshi 10 Dan Isao Ichikawa several times while he was young. In 1996, he was able to attend a week-long training camp in Hawaii with Hanshi, 10th Dan Nobuo Ichikawa. Hanshi Nobuo promoted him to Shodan (1st degree black belt) in 1996.

After he graduated from Bradley in 1997, he began leading Doshinkan classes, eventually in the St. Louis area, where he taught high school English. In 1998, he traveled to Mexico to train with Hanshi for another special week-long training. He married Anna,  and in the first three and a half years of their marriage, they had three sons: Ryan, Connor, and Jack.

In 2004, he made his first trip to Austria and Germany for the week of Summer Training, at which time he was able to train a couple of times in the honbu dojo with Hanshi. He has since attended three other week-long Summer Training camps, for a total of six over the years.  He was honored when Hanshi Nobuo awarded him the title Renshi in 2005and Shihan in 2018; with the exception of his wife and sons, it is what he is most proud of.

Since 1992, he has trained with Hanshi whenever possible, usually for a few days during each visit Hanshi makes to the United States in the spring and fall. Doshinkan is one of the most important, driving forces in his life.
